Española? o nacida en el extranjero?

Soy nacida y criada en Cabo Rojo, un pequeño pueblo localizado en el área sur oeste de Puerto Rico a 2 1/2 horas de la ciudad capital San Juan. Tengo raíces españolas (Andaluza y Catalana) por parte de mi familia y vivo muy orgullosa de ellas; siempre digo que he heredado lo mejor de dos mundos: el sabor del Caribe y el amor por las tradiciones y costumbres de mi madre patria España.

El modelaje fue tu primera opción y la dejaste. Querrías regresar y cómo?

Para mi el modelaje es una variación del arte ya que varias piezas que se presentan en una pasarela son autenticas obras de arte. El modelaje fue una etapa en mi vida que disfruté mucho por el poco tiempo que duró. No obstante, no me cierro a la posibilidad de volver a hacerlo si el momento es el idóneo y si existe química entre el diseñador y yo, porque no? Sin embargo, pienso que en la posición en la que me encuentro actualmente haría mejor papel dentro del entorno del desfile como bailaora de flamenco que como modelo en la pasarela.

En que tipo de pasarelas trabajaste?

Yo hice mis "pininitos" en pasarelas pequeñas en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Sin embargo, debido a mi corta estatura, fue en editoriales de moda y belleza donde me di a conocer.

Alta costura, glamour, flamenco, pasarelas, diseñadores, prensa. A qué le temes?

Yo no le temo a nada al contrario todo ese mundo me fascina y pienso que cada uno complementa al otro.

Si fueras diseñadora, qué línea escogerías?

Escogería una línea elegante que realce la silueta de la mujer y la haga lucir femenina y sofisticada con algunos detalles como las flores, los lunares o los volantes que nos recuerden un paseo por la Alambra en la Vieja Granada o una tarde en la feria de Abril de Sevilla, España.

Entre lo sofisticado y elegante y lo juvenil. Qué prefieres y por qué?

Yo soy una mujer muy camaleónica. Tengo en mi guarda ropa los tres estilos dependiendo de la ocasión, mi estado de animo, el lugar o la hora del día; una combinación entre las chicas de “Sex and the City” Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte, Miranda y Samantha, la reina Rania de Jordania y moda flamenca española. Me gusta jugar con los estilos y combinar piezas sofisticadas y elegantes con otras piezas más casuales. Por ejemplo, me gusta combinar unos vaqueros (jeans) con una blusa con pedrerías de estilo elegante y unas sandalias de tacón. Esta combinación es fantástica para salir a cenar a un bistro o una noche en la ciudad con las amigas ya que tiende a ser casual sin dejar a un lado la elegancia y femineidad que nos debe caracterizar a las mujeres. Por otra parte no me gustan los escotes muy pronunciados ni las faldas o pantalones muy cortos, pienso que para lucir atractiva no hay que mostrar tanto.

Me puedes explicar, por qué siempre las pasarelas, en su mayoría, presentan tendencias femeninas y muy poco se tiran a los masculino?

Pienso que el motivo principal por esto es que mayormente somos nosotras las mujeres las que estamos pendientes de la moda. En ese aspecto somos mejores clientas que los hombres, ya que no tan solo es la vestimenta, sino también los zapatos y los accesorios. No son muchos los hombres que los que asisten a un desfile de modas para ver las nuevas tendencias, a menos que estén vinculados al medio. A muchos hombres les da igual lo que se ponen; no les importa mucho si es una pieza de diseñador o no.

Y dónde queda la ropa juvenil?. No es muy común ver pasarelas con un toque pop. Qué dices?

Es cierto no es común ver las pasarelas tendencias con un toque pop. Pienso que la mayoría de las mujeres que asisten a un desfile buscan colecciones en su mayoría más elegantes y sofisticadas ya que se mueven en un circulo social mas adulto. Sin embargo, pienso que algunos diseñadores deberían tomar en cuenta al publico joven y chic y presentar sus tendencias en las pasarelas ya que creo serian muy bien recibidas por el publico joven que goza de la moda.

Si el público de las pasarelas es muy dado a los espectáculos en donde siempre hay un artista como tu, a que mecanismos tendrías que recurrir para estar frente a ellos con un arte como el tuyo?

Yo pienso que lo que los únicos mecanismos que yo necesito para capturar al publico con mi arte es el sentimiento y la pasión que yo transmito cuando me subo al tablao a bailar.

El flamenco es un arte en el que tanto el público como cada integrante del cuadro flamenco incluyendo por supuesto al bailaor se entregan mutuamente. Por medio del cante y del baile nosotros podemos expresar lo que sentimos; nuestros movimientos corporales expresan sin palabras tristezas, alegrías y hasta coraje con la misma fuerza y la misma intensidad. Es por eso que este arte es uno tan lleno de fuego y pasión. En un principio las personas que nunca han presenciado este genero pueden experimentar varias sensaciones: o les gusta de primera instancia por la fuerza y pasión que encierran sus movimientos y su música; puede no gustarle ya que pueden verlo como un género muy folklórico o pueden llegar a sentirse confundidos por no poder entender lo que el mismo significa, lo que encierra y lo que representa.

Please tell us about the Flamenco dance

Yes, I would say my biggest passion is dancing flamenco. For those who doesn't know this type of dancing, it is originated in Andalucia Spain (southern Spain). This musical genre incorporates Hindu, Jewish and Moroccan rythms and encloses the experiences lived by the gypsies, an ethnic group that have been persecuted and discriminated over the centuries. Flamenco dancing is not easy; as dancers we have to commit ourselves to practice for long hours and to study and learn the different “palos”, “toques” and “llamadas” so that the final product is one that will touch the people’s soul. At this point I can tell you that I would definitely feel tempted to give a great show at a fashion show. It is one of my biggest dreams to be dancing flamenco at a fashion show inspired by the colors, flair and traditions of Spain.

Flamenco dancing is a form of art in which everyone involved (dancers, singers, guitarist and even the public) give themselves to one another. Through the singing and dancing we can express what we feel; our corporal movements express without words sadness, happiness and even anger with the same passion and intensity. That’s why this form of art is one full of live and fire. At the beginning people that have never been exposed this genre can experiment various sensations. Either they love it immediately because of the fire and passion that is transmitted through it’s movements and music; They might see it as a very folkloric genre and not like it at all; or they might even feel confused by not been able to understand what this art really means, what it encloses and what it represents. I am sure that the only mechanisms that I need to capture the public with my art is the feeling and passion I tend to transmit when I dance.

The modeling was your first option and you refused it. Would you like to go back and how?.

I see modeling as another way of art because there are many pieces that designers introduce at a fashion show that are truly magnificent pieces of art. Modeling was a step in my life that I enjoyed a lot during the short time it lasted. However, if I was to return to the industry, I would do it if the moment is right and if there’s chemistry between the designer and myself. I think that because of where I am in my life right now, I would do a better role as a flamenco dancer rather than being on the runway.

In what kind of runways did you worked on.

I did various runways at small fashion shows in San Juan Puerto Rico. However, because of my petite height, people in the industry got to know me through beauty and fashion campaigns and magazines.

Where were you born?

I was born and raised in Cabo Rojo, a small town located on the southwestern area of Puerto Rico, about 2 1/2 hours from the main city San Juan. I have Spaniard roots (Andalusian and Catalonian) and I am extremely proud of them. I always say that I have inherited the best of both worlds: the flavor of the Caribbean and the love for the Spaniard traditions.

What of these do you fear the most?

I fear nothing, on the contrary I love all that and I believe that one compliments the other one.

If you were a designer, what type of line would you choose?

I would choose an elegant line to complement every woman and would make her look feminine and sophisticated with details such as flowers, polka dots or even ruffles that might remind us a walk at the Alhambra in Old Granada or an afternoon at the April fair in Seville Spain.

Between the sophisticated, the elegant, and the juvenile, which do you prefer and why?

I am like a chameleon. I have all three styles in my wardrobe; depending the occasion, my mood, the place or the time of the day. I always say that I am a combination among the girls of Sex and the City “Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha, the Queen Rania of Jordania and flamenco fashion. I like to play with styles and to combine elegant and sophisticated pieces with more casual pieces. For instance, I like to combine a pair of jeans with an elegant beaded top and high heel sandals. This is the perfect combination for going out at night with the girls or dinner at a bistro. On the other hand, I do not like plunging necklines nor skirts/dresses that are too short, I believe that a woman does not need to show too much to look attractive.

Why on the majority of runways we can see more women that men?

I think that the main reason is because we are the ones that pay close attention to fashion. In that department, we are better customers than men are; is not just the clothing but the shoes and accessories as well. Not too many men go to a fashion shows on their own to see the newest trends unless they are attached to the industry in some or another way. Many men don’t care if they are wearing designer clothing or not.

It’s not very common to see runways with a juvenile design. What do you say about this?

True, it’s not common to see fashion shows like that. I think that the majority of women that go to fashion shows are looking for elegant and sophisticated trends because they surround themselves with a more grown up circle of people. However, I think that some designers should take into consideration the young and the hip and introduce their trends in the shows since there are lots of young people that enjoy fashion and love to be wearing the latest trends.

Life is a world full of possibilities. All we need is to have a dream and do everything in our power to make it come true. We need to persevere for everything we want to accomplish and never allow no one or anything to stop us. Only we are responsible of our own happiness, no one else.
